Cool plans for hot days: 9 things to do in Victoria this summer
It’s no secret that Victoria shows up for summer. In fact, it shows off. From beachside rituals to twilight movies and world-class sporting events, there’s something here to keep every calendar full and camera roll happy. So, whether you’re a lifelong local or first-time visitor, thrill-seeker or leisure-seeker, we’ve rounded up the nine best spots to ensure you make the most of the season.
1. Melbourne Zoo
A summer day at the Melbourne Zoo is a classic for a reason.
Set in lush parkland just minutes from the CBD, it’s the perfect escape for families, dates or solo wanderers with a soft spot for wildlife.
You’ll get face time with everything from playful lemurs and giant tortoises to graceful giraffes and majestic lions. There’s also a butterfly house, reptile centre and plenty of shady picnic spots to cool down in.
And how’s this for a bonus? During the summer months, Zoo Twilights brings live music into the mix. Which means you can spend golden hour with a cool drink in hand, surrounded by animals and beats. Bliss.

2. Kayaking tour of the Yarra River
Gliding through the city’s heart as the skyline shimmers around you – this isn’t your average sightseeing tour.
On a Yarra River kayaking adventure, you’ll float past iconic landmarks like Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, all while hearing the stories that built the city.
Choose a morning tour to start your day with calm and clarity or opt for a twilight paddle to watch the city lights dance on the water. Some tours even include dinner served on the kayak – only the best for us Melburnian foodies!

3. Australian Open
We all know that every year, Melbourne hosts the Australian Open. But did you know that Melbourne transforms for it?
Whether you’re courtside at Rod Laver or sprawled on a beanbag at Grand Slam Oval, the atmosphere is electric. You’ll be surrounded by fans from every corner of the world, all cheering, sweating and celebrating the same thing: epic tennis.
Every summer, the AO precinct turns into a pop-up village with live music, rooftop bars, gourmet eats and Insta-worthy backdrops. Even if you don’t know your deuce from your drop shot, it’s a must-see.
Game. Set. Match.

4. Test Cricket at the MCG
A day at the cricket is a rite of passage in Melbourne – especially at the MCG.
Not a die-hard fan? The cold drinks and camaraderie alone make the day out worthwhile. There’s simply something undeniable about being part of a summer Test crowd.
There’s the buzz of the Barmy Army, the wave of the crowd and the occasional duck (on the field – or in the stands when a batter hits it for 6).
From Boxing Day onwards, the ‘G becomes the heart of the city. So, grab a hat, slap on some sunscreen and soak up the tradition.

5. Game Worlds Exhibition at ACMI
Calling all gamers, geeks and curious culture seekers: ACMI’s Game Worlds exhibition is your next adventure.
Housed in the iconic Fed Square gallery, this immersive showcase celebrates the art, history and evolution of video games. It’s interactive. Insightful. And a full sensory experience.
Think pixel art, playable zones, original consoles and behind-the-scenes design secrets. And because it’s ACMI, you know it’ll be world-class.
Perfect for a cooler day when you want to escape the heat – but not the fun.

6. Penguin Parade on Phillip Island
If you haven’t witnessed a sunset on Phillip Island, this season’s the time to do it.
Every evening, dozens (sometimes hundreds!) of little penguins waddle ashore after a day fishing in the sea – and it’s as heartwarming as it sounds.
Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, the Penguin Parade is one of Victoria’s most loved natural attractions, and it’s even more special in summer. Book ahead to secure a spot on the boardwalk or in one of the viewing towers. And why not make a day of it with a stop at Cowes or one of the island’s stunning beaches?
But don’t forget your jacket! Sea breezes don’t care what month it is.

7. Moonlight Cinema
What’s better than a summer movie night? A summer movie night in the open air, with the city skyline behind you and a picnic rug under you.
The Moonlight Cinema in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens is an institution. You can bring your own snacks and drinks (although you may be judged if popcorn is not included), or grab something from the onsite bar and food trucks.
The line-up covers everything from nostalgic favourites to the latest blockbusters, and if you feel like a little luxury, Gold Grass tickets get you premium beanbags and waiter service.
Perfect for date night, mate night or a night out with the whole family.

8. Gumbuya World
Just an hour out of Melbourne, Gumbuya World brings the energy of a theme park and water park all in one – with a side of wildlife sanctuary for good measure.
Cool off in the epic wave pool, brave the water slides or drift lazily down the Typhoon Island rapids. Then dry off and meet some of Australia’s most iconic animals. Koalas, kangaroos, crocs, emus… you name it!
This is the ultimate family day out. But trust us, big kids will love it too. Summer boredom doesn’t exist here.

9. Luna Park
You can’t say you’ve done a Melbourne summer until you’ve walked through Mr Moon’s mouth.
Luna Park is arguably St Kilda’s most iconic attraction – and for good reason. The vintage rollercoasters, candy-coloured carnival games and ocean views make it a dreamy day out for just about anyone.
Hop on the historic Scenic Railway (the world’s oldest continually operating rollercoaster!) or win yourself a giant plush prize at the ring toss.
Summer nights also bring fairy lights and music, turning the park into a twinkling seaside wonderland.
