So much more than salespeople

From go-to karaoke tunes to book, TV, holiday and restaurant recommendations, we asked four of our salespeople the big questions.

Who would Limor want on her team during a zombie apocalypse? What items would Daniel need stranded, alone, on a desert island?

Who’s a fan of Bali and Buddha Bowls – and who might you spot belting out Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody on the weekend?

Let’s find out!

What’s your favourite place to eat, and why?

Cicciolina, on Acland St in St Kilda. The service is amazing, and the food – and wine – is consistently delicious. I always get such a friendly welcome there.

What are you streaming right now? Any books or TV series to recommend?

At the moment, I’m enjoying The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem on Netflix.

But I’m not really the sort to sit on the couch watching Netflix all night. I prefer to get out and about. And support the cultural institutions in my neighbourhood and wider community.

The Classic Cinema is my go-to for movies. For independent film festivals, you can’t beat it.

Where did you grow up?

I haven’t! I was born in Israel but grew up in Australia. (I also ‘existed’ in the United States for 10 years, across New York and Maryland.)

What do you remember most about your childhood?

I was raised in a warm, welcoming family. We never locked the door, and family and friends were always dropping in – regardless of the hour!

You never needed an invitation. And there was always a great spread on the table.

Where do you go on holiday? What’s the favourite place you’ve travelled to?

Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Israel – I loved them all. (Particularly the Algarve coast.) And I adore Tel Aviv.

The zombie apocalypse is coming. Which three people do you want on your team?

Well, you’d be crazy not to take Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead – particularly with all that experience under his belt! I’d also take Sarah McLachlan, so she can sing to me.

Thirdly, I’d want Kitty Flanagan or Sam Pang – because I love to laugh.

What does an ideal weekend look like for you?

You mean apart from getting great results for my clients at packed auctions – in picture perfect weather?

Apart from that, I like outdoor activities in nature. And catching up with friends and family.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Can’t Take My Eyes off You by Frankie Valli. Love the newer renditions of this, too.

Who are the most important people in your life?

My family and closest friends, of course. My kids Keren, Ari and Gadi – and their partners – mean the world to me. As do my sister and her family.

You’re stranded on a desert island. You can have three things with you. What are they?

A cache of emergency supplies, for starters – a big bunch of flare guns will do. I’ll also need some sort of tool to catch my own food with, so I’ll take a fishing rod.

Then, probably some seeds. Because with time and water, all things grow.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

You have two ears and one mouth. Use them in that ratio!

What’s your favourite place to eat, and why?

Kenzan, just off Flinders Streets. It’s a Japanese restaurant that does amazing sushi!

What are you streaming right now? Any books or TV series to recommend?

I just finished Black Bird on Apple TV – and am now getting stuck into The Bear on Disney+. It’s a comedy-drama series about a chef who heads home to run his family’s ailing restaurant.

Where did you grow up?

In Caulfield, just around the corner.

What do you remember most about your childhood?

Ah, it depends what part of it you mean. I spent a lot of time with a very close group of mates. Playing in the park; later, the pub. Kicking the ball around, or heading out down Chapel Street.

Where do you go on holiday? What’s the favourite place you’ve travelled to?

Japan – Kyoto is particularly phenomenal. I love to travel, and Iceland is another of my favourite places. My next trip is to Dubai – I can’t wait.

The zombie apocalypse is coming. Which three people do you want on your team?

Ah, my wife and two kids for sure. Oh, wait – do you mean who’s going to help me survive?

Okay. Let’s go with [Foo Fighters and former Nirvana member] Dave Grohl. And [legendary former Manchester United manager] Sir Alex Ferguson.

The third? Ah, go on then – my wife!

What does an ideal day look like for you?

Squeezing in the gym at first light, before coming home to get the boys out of bed. Breakfast with them before work, then hanging out with (and feeding!) them when I get home.

In the evening, I’ll catch up with my wife, or see if there’s a Premier League soccer game on. Or head out to catch up with some friends over a drink.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. But I’m a terrible singer, so only under duress!

Who are the most important people in your life?

That’d be my wife and two kids.

You’re stranded on a desert island. You can have three things with you. What are they?

My phone. (Oh, wait. There’s no power source or charger? Hmmm.) Let’s make it a phone with a never-ending battery, then. And a picture frame with a photo of my family, for sure. Wait – there’ll be plenty of pictures on my phone, won’t there! I’ve bought myself an extra slot.

For the last two items, let’s go with an umbrella. And an esky (with a couple of cold beers inside!).

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Just to be open-minded and empathetic. You have conversations with people from all walks of life, every day. So you need to be able to understand them, and where they’re coming from.

What’s your favourite place to eat, and why?

It’s got to be Saigon Street Eats in St Kilda East for a chicken noodle pho with Jeremy.

What are you streaming right now? Any books or TV series to recommend?

Not at the moment – I’m too busy! But I am loving this season of The Block.

Where did you grow up?

I’m a born-and-bred Caulfield boy, and I’ve lived there for most of my life.

What do you remember most about your childhood?

I had a wonderful childhood. Two great parents; lots of holidays; plenty of friends in the local area.

Being on the doorstep of Caulfield Park, I spent a lot of time there: playing pickup cricket or cycling. (BMX bikes were big back then!)

Where do you go on holiday? What’s the favourite place you’ve travelled to?

My all-time favourite destination is Singapore. I have friends over there, and it’s a beautiful place.

The weather’s lovely, it’s nice and clean, and the food’s delicious. It’s the gateway to other Asian gems too, like Thailand and Malaysia.

The zombie apocalypse is coming. Which three people do you want on your team?

That’s easy. My wife Melanie, my daughter Aimee, and my son Benji. We’d get through the end of days with love, laughter and good times!

What does an ideal weekend look like for you?

Out and about for a bit of breakfast or brunch. I like the sunshine; love the outdoors. I’ve recently taken up a spot of golf with Benji – his drive is coming along nicely.

Otherwise, we’ll drive down the coast for a look around. A bit of strawberry picking or wine tasting down in Mornington is always fun.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Walking Away by Craig David.

Who are the most important people in your life?

The same people I’m surviving the zombie apocalypse with. They’re my whole world.

You’re stranded on a desert island. You can have three things with you. What are they?

First thing, my phone. Second, a good book – something business-oriented.

Third? Probably a hat, or at least some sunscreen. I’m bald!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

To always smile. I do!

What’s your favourite place to eat, and why?

For a nice meal, I love Gimlet at Cavendish House – it makes me feel like I’m in Europe!

For something more casual, I love Mooks café on Hawthorn Road for breakfast or brunch. Try the Buddha Bowl – you won’t be disappointed!

What are you streaming right now? Any books or TV series to recommend?

Right now, I’m streaming The Watcher on Netflix. As for books, I’ve just finished reading The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku. Simply brilliant.

Where did you grow up?

Caulfield.

What do you remember most about your childhood?

Themed family dinners. There was Pie Night, Fish ‘n’ Chips Night. The takeaways were always the best!

Where do you go on holiday? What’s the favourite place you’ve travelled to?

My favourite relaxing holiday destination is Bali. It’s a complete unwind; pure indulgence. I love Thailand, and Europe is also special – particularly Italy.

What does an ideal weekend look like for you?

I like to venture out of the city: somewhere regional, like Daylesford or Red Hill. The former has Lavendula Swiss Italian Farm, and the latter has Polperro Winery – both resplendent, relaxing places to spend a weekend.

Closer to home, you’ll find me meandering along Gardiners Creek. Or strolling the Elwood Canal and Beach Walk.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. A stone-cold classic!

Who are the most important people in your life?

My daughter Lydia, my partner Paul, my parents David and Emilia, and my friends – they know who they are.

You’re stranded on a desert island. You can have three things with you. What are they?

Spotify, Uber Eats, and sunscreen.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

You’re not getting any younger. So seize the day – and enjoy every moment!
